Guided tours around Chinon

We propose different guided itineraries around different themes and for 1,2 or 3 days. Our Froggytravel representative will pick you up and drop you off at your hotel or at the train station; our itineraries are conceived for your enjoyment but can be tailored to match your interests; history, wine tasting, quaint villages, outdoor markets etc…

Different possibilities to match your interests.

Option #1 – Gardens and castles (May to late September only) – $295 per person (minimum two).

Let’s start with Chaumont for the superb park and the amazing yearly “Garden Festival”. Quick and simple lunch on site. Next stop will be the charming town of Amboise for a visit of the castle dominating the city and to Le Clos Luce, Da Vinci last residence. The “must be seen” stunning Villandry gardens and castle will end this busy day.

Option #2 – Gardens and wines. (May to late September only) – $284 per person (minimum two).

Usse will be the first stop before Villandry for the amazing and famous gardens. A tasting of the lovely whites of Vouvray (bubbly, still or semi-sweet) is on the program before a simple lunch on the road. Le Rivau castle is our next stop for the superb gardens and some memories of Joan of Arc; the day will end with a tasting of the red Chinon wines.

Option #3 – Castles only.  $302 per person (minimum two).

From Tours, a day to visit the most famous castles: Chenonceau, Chambord and Cheverny.  All the beauty and charm of the renaissance with Chenonceau, all the grandeur and display of power of Francis the 1st with Chambord, all the splendor of past nobility in Cheverny, occupied by the same family for 600 years. Lunch in a village.

DAY 1:

Your guide will be waiting for you at the Tours train station or at your hotel for a first day to get acquainted with this exceptionally rich region. A short drive to Amboise will allow your guide to understand your needs and requests.

Charles VIII castle in Amboise will be our first stop, followed by the interesting visit of Clos Luce, Leonardo da Vinci last residence. Lunch in a village before Chaumont and its wonderful gardens.

Night in Chinon, Marcay or Montbazon, your choice. See hotels description at the bottom of this page.

DAY 2:

Wines and history today starting with Saumur for its castle and the famous bubbly for a tasting in impressive caves. The beautiful Royal Abbey of Fontefraud will allow you to refresh your memory or to learn about Alienor d’Aquitaine, Henry II Plantagenet, John Lackland and Richard Lion’s Heart. Lunch in a village before a stop in Candes Saint Martin. Memories of Joan of Arc will be with us for the rest of the day in Le Rivau Castle and in Chinon. Quench your thirst late afternoon with some Chinon wines.

DAY 3:

The largest and most famous castles are on this last day’s program. Azay-le-Rideau (first castle built as leisure residence a change from the heavy wall and towers of defensive castles), then Chenonceau (own by women for most of its history it is the most feminine of all) and finally Chambord (Francois 1st showcase of power) before getting back to the train station (or your hotel). Lunch in a village.
