Wines and Castles

DAY 1 - Tue. June 03 - After landing in Paris CDG airport, a high speed train will bring us to Tours in less than one hour. No winery for this first day with jet lag. Gardens and castle of Villandry then lunch. We will stop by Usse to admire the splendid castle on our way to the small medieval town of Chinon, our home for the next 4 nights. Hotel de France or Hotel Diderot.

Day 2 - Wed. June 04 - Morning guided visit to the Royal abbey of Fontevrault before a Saumur-Champigny winery. After lunch and a tasting of the famous Saumur bubbly, we will stop by the “mushroom museum” (yes it exists!). The Saumur castle is on our way back to Chinon. Dinner near the hotel.  

Day 3 - Thu. June 05 - Visit of the Chinon fortress and a walk in the picturesque and quaint village of Cande-St-Martin before an introduction to the regional wine. After lunch (a picnic, if weather permits) the Bonaventure will welcome us at  their winery, in the same family since the 13 century.  To end the afternoon, we will learn how to make the famous local “Sainte Maure” cheese. Dinner  on  your  own.    

Day 4 - Fri. June 06 - Rabelais’ house (the first “lobbyist” for Chinon wines in the 1500’s) and the vineyards of Bourgeuil in the morning. Lunch in the village of Azay-le-Rideau before a visit of the castle. Back to Chinon for a farewell dinner.

Day 5 - Sat. June 07 - En route to Vouvray (the best kept secret among French whites), lunch in Amboise after Le Clos Luce, Da Vinci last residence. Afternoon at the magnificent castles of Chenonceau and Chambord before heading to CDG airport for our last night. Dinner on your own.
