DAY(7) Saturday

After enjoying the weekly open market of Saumur (if weather permits) the Bouvet-Ladubay is our first winery of today.

Bouvet Ladubay makes bubbly of remarkable quality as well as many different whites. An active theatre is among the surprises we will discover deep in the rocks before enjoying a sampling of their production.

Before lunch, we will stop by the castle towering above the old city and the Loire River. Built in the 14th century for the Duke of Anjou, it was successively used as city governor's residence, prison and arsenal.

After the charming village of Candes-Saint-Martin, a guide/historian will help us to resuscitate Alienor d'Aquitaine in the beautiful 11 century Abbey of Fontevraud. Twice Queen (France then England) and mother of two kings, Alienor's life is a fascinating novel set in the 12 century.

Bottles of Saumur Champigny will help us to finish the day at the Domaine des Roches Neuves for a presentation of these superb wines.

Farewell dinner in Chinon, at the Chapeau Rouge or close by, at the Chateau de Marcay.

Night in Chinon.
